Calcot Park Golf Club

Harry Colt design park land course in the middle of Reading

Course Information

One of the best courses in Reading. Not the longest course, but the greens are what make it a tough challenge. A friendly bar atmosphere with great food available after, and a good halfway house available at weekends.

Favourite holes include:

7th - par 3 over water and uphill.
8th - stroke index 1 hole which needs an accurate drive or long iron.
10th - driveable par 4 which can lead to lots of fun and the occasional eagle.
18th - a long par 4 when played into the wind. A tough finishing hole which you are always happy to walk off with a par!

White tees : 6,300 yards

Best course in the area

I was a member at this course for around 3 years before moving away. It is easily the best course in Reading. Although not the longest, the greens are always fast. They are a real test of your short game and putting. Good chances for birdies on the par 5 6th and par 4 10th which is easily reachable with a good drive. The rest of the course is tough! Excellent halfway house which is open on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Gareth the head professional and his team are excellent. Friendly bar and membership, and the restaurant does good food. Saturday and Sunday mornings are always really busy - so if you are visiting I'd suggest trying to get a round during the week.

Aspirational course

Growing up in Reading this course was a boyhood dream for me, jumping fences to view the perfectly manicured course. Truly a marvellous course with undulating fairways and greens. The greens are huge, fast but true. This is a well established and traditional Golf Club with a membership and committee to match. The course integrity is the utmost importance, quite rightly, and is often closed during heavy rain. The clubhouse serves great food and has a lively feel during competitions and social occasions. For me there are set groups that pre-book tee times and this is allowed to cover competitions which makes the club appear clique and hard to mix. If you add yourself to an empty slot the people are friendly but it is still hard to get integrated so can feel a little unwelcoming. The Golf Pro is phenomenal and makes you feel very welcome. I have no clue how he or his team remember all the names. The pro shop is well stocked and has great facilities.
